MUMMIES Egyptian archaeologists on a wooden coffin discovered in a 3,500-year-old tomb
In March, a German-Egyptian archaeological team uncovered a 26-foot-tall statue believed to be of Ramses the Great, who ruled more than 3,000 years ago and is widely considered ancient Egypt's most powerful ruler.
The mummies were elaborately preserved therefore likely belong to officials and priests, he said.
The archaeological site where the discovery was made is located in the collage of Tuna al-Gabal which is on the edge of the western desert.
The mummies, which are not of royal personages, have not yet been dated but the ministry said they belonged to the Late Period, which spanned nearly 300 years up to Alexander the Great's conquest of Egypt in 332BC.
"We found catacombs containing a number of mummies", said Salah al-Kholi, a Cairo University professor of Egyptology who headed the mission that made the discovery in the Touna el-Gabal district of the province in central Egypt.
Egypt's Minister of Antiquities, Khaled El-Enany, termed it as an important discovery because it was the first in the area in more than six decades.
A group of Egyptian archaeologists have discovered 17 non-royal mummies in the country's Minya province, the antiquities ministry announced on Saturday, according to AFP. The discovery is the first of its kind since 1950, when egyptologist Sami Gabra discovered a burial site of ibis and baboons on that date. Tourism accounted for almost 12 percent of Egypt's economy in 2015 and even more in the preceding years. "It is as if our ancestors are sending a message for tourism to come back strongly".
Archaeologists from Cairo University, working in excavations, believe that the discovered tomb can be 17, and at least 32 of the mummy, in which embalmed including the remains of women, children and infants.
Last Tuesday, the antiquities ministry announced the finding of a 3,700-year-old burial chamber near the remains of a recently discovered pyramid at Dashur, south of Cairo.
The tourism sector, a crucial source of hard currency, has struggled to regain ground amid a growing number of attacks in recent years.
