McDonnell: Labour Will "Come Out Fighting" From Historic Council Election Loss

14 May 2017, 01:23 | Cassandra Thompson

British Defense Secretary Michael Fallon, who is also a Conservative, said the outcome was "very encouraging", but noted that the results were not an "accurate prediction" of a general election.

Across Scotland, the Conservatives had the biggest gains, up 164 seats to 276 - pointing to a revival for the party which has only one MP north of the border.

34 councils in England - including Hertfordshire - are up for grabs, along with all in Wales and Scotland.

The Labour party sought to play down its drubbing with the shadow chancellor, John McDonnell, claiming the party had "all to play for" in the General Election.

Early results in the polls, which voters often use as an opportunity to protest against the ruling party, showed May's Conservatives had gained more than 100 council seats and secured victory for their candidate as mayor for the West of England.

At Conservatives taking 50% of UKIP's votes, Labour would be set to lose around 36 seats due to this effect alone.

The right-wing U.K. Independence Party, whose animosity to the European Union helped drive Britain out of the bloc, failed to hold a single seat in early counting, as voters switched to the Conservatives now that UKIP's main goal has been achieved.

With the results in from all 88 local authorities being contested, the Conservatives won 1,900 seats, up 558; Labour won 1,151, down 320; and the pro-EU Liberal Democrats won 441, down 37.

Tribune Media Company upgraded to Equal Weight By Morgan Stanley
Tribune Media Co (NYSE:TRCO) have shown a low EPS growth of -12.63% in the last 5 years and has earnings growth of 125.80% yoy. The business had revenue of $439.90 million during the quarter, compared to the consensus estimate of $450.18 million.

The Conservatives registered gains of over 550 seats and bagged an extra 11 councils as counting in the local polls edged towards closing point this evening.

As Ukip shed 107 councillors while holding a solitary seat in Lancashire, leader Paul Nuttall said the party was "a victim of its own success" over Brexit.

It was a bad day for the Labour party in Ashfield as just one councillor was elected to Nottinghamshire County Council.

Asked if she had killed off Ukip, she replied: "I think if we look at what's happened in the local elections we have taken votes from across the whole of the political spectrum".

They do confirm the Conservatives are on track to make some gains here, but don't give much overall information as to whether predictions the Conservatives could become Wales's largest party for the first time since 1922 are in line - but this does remain possible.

Labour emerged seriously diminished, losing five councils and with 133 fewer councillors.

Party leader Nicola Sturgeon said wresting control from Labour and becoming the biggest party on Glasgow City Council was a "fantastic, historic result".

"We expected the Ukip vote to collapse to some extent but we didn't expect to annihilate the Ukip representation on county councils up and down the country". When I said we could do this - people simply didn't believe me.
