Fernando Alonso has exit strategy from McLaren if F1 team continues to falter

McLaren driver Fernando Alonso of Spain left pauses next to Carlos Sainz of Spain and Scuderia Toro Rosso during a press conference at the Barcelona Catalunya racetrack in Montmelo just outside Barcelona Spain Thursday

The newly-installed American told reporters at the Spanish Grand Prix on Friday that he had watched the previous day's news conference during which two-time champion Alonso, who is taking leave from the team to miss the Monaco Grand Prix later this month and instead race in the Indianapolis 500, issued his personal ultimatum. After sitting out the rest of Practice One and escaping to the tennis court, Alonso was then slowest of all in Practice Two.

The two-time Formula One champion has yet to finish a race this season due to reliability issues with his vehicle and its troublesome Honda engine.

Alonso slipped away from the track and played some paddle tennis to "keep the body active" while mechanics changed out his car's engine before the afternoon session, when he was the last of the 20 drivers to venture out.

"It was more or less expected that we would have these problems".

Alonso's deal with McLaren expires at the end of the year and it seems unlikely he will extend his torrid three-season stay with the British team.

And while she took the criticism (and Bergeron's comments) like a champ, it does still get to her during the judging. The athlete has been dancing her ass off in these competitions, but has yet to get a ideal score.

Alonso is out of contract at the end of this season and has said he wants to stay in F1 if he can find a vehicle that will allow him to fight at the front. "I think that next week when we start the free practice with other people around I will build confidence and my understanding of what the auto needs".

McLaren's team radio told him to "stop the auto, stop the auto, engine problem" as a pool of liquid dripped from the underside of the vehicle.

The two-time champion's contract with McLaren concludes at the end of this year, and Alonso has made it clear he wants to have a competitive auto as soon as possible. When we complete my full last lap in a Formula 1 vehicle which was on the Saturday in Russian Federation because on Sunday we didn't manage to complete the formation lap and here we could not manage to complete the out lap. And with Kimi Raikkonen struggling to consistently match the pace of Sebastian Vettel, rumors of an Alonso return to Ferrari are beginning to grow.

"But at the end of the day we've had this year some good Fridays and Saturdays, but bad Sundays as we haven't finished a race yet".

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, who won the race a year ago to make history as the youngest GP victor at age 18, and Daniel Ricciardo were next. "I am happy with the team, but we are not winning".

But Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff said: "We are not doing anything for Honda, that is the current status quo".
